In mid-March, 70 middle school children from Pasco, Hernando, and Citrus counties along with 90 Hernando-Pasco Hospice (HPH) volunteers and staff gathered at Lakewood Retreat in Brooksville for the annual weekend Children’s Assistance Program (CAP) camp. All of the children have been receiving bereavement counseling from one of our CAP counselors at no charge due to an anticipated or unexpected loss. The weekend experience focused on team building activities, sharing, processing grief through small group conversations, art therapy, and a moving memorial service on Saturday evening.  Most of all, the campers left feeling less alone in their grief realizing that there are others their age who share many of the same feelings.  HPH is grateful to its volunteers, the community groups that so generously support the CAP camp, and the United Way of Pasco County which provides more than $28,000 funding for this program every year.
